Journaling and our mindfulness practice

It’s not always easy finding moments of peace and self-reflection during our busy days. Mindfulness, as the art of being present in the moment, puts us in a mental state that allows us to free ourselves from the shackles of the past and the uncertainties of the future. Journaling is one of those daily activities that could help facilitate mindfulness, enhance our well-being, and foster personal growth.

Journaling involves putting pen to paper to express our thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It is a therapeutic process that allows us to externalize our internal world, offering a tangible record of our journey through life. Whether in the form of daily reflections, gratitude lists, or creative expressions, journaling becomes a personal sanctuary for self-discovery.

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, contemplating resolutions and envisioning the possibilities that lie ahead, journaling is a simple yet powerful practice that can significantly contribute to our personal growth and well-being. And the beginning of the year is one of the best times to start a journaling habit.

A simple journaling practice to usher in the new year

Find a stretch of quiet time when you can sit down undisturbed to carry out this activity. It can be 5 minutes if that’s all you have, or 2 hours if you can afford the time. The following are just prompts, you’re free to write in an unstructured way and free to answer/consider one or all of the items below.

Take a deep breath, embrace the silence, and reflect on the year that was.

  • What are my favorite moments, and how can I recreate them in 2024?

  • What relationships were most meaningful? How can I nurture these next year?

  • What are my top 3 biggest accomplishments?

  • What 10 things made me smile and laugh?

  • What are my biggest regrets, and why?

  • What events or activities made me lose track of time in 2023?

  • What are the things that I would like to create, feel, achieve, and plan for next year?

Use your reflections from your past year to catalyze positive changes in the new year – to elevate your world in the ways that are most important to you. Step into the New Year with clarity and intention at our ‘Beginner’s Mind’ mindfulness retreat.
